Apologies all but I think I'm not going to be in a psoition to do anymore updates until next week. On saturday evening my hard drive started making some very odd sounds but despite being slow, I could still use it. However, upon logging on on Sunday morning I discovered that nothing worked.
I tried to defragment it but for some reason the defragger wouldn't recognise the drive. Upon trying to use the disk doctor, I got my answer: Fatal Hardware Error. Apparently it has taken me but three and a half short years to completely trash my Mac's HD. While I've set the wheels in motion regarding a replacement that probably won't be until next week or the weekend at best so I'm left partly deconnected and feeling distinctly like the character at the start of Stross' Accelerando when he gets his cyber-sunglases stolen.
As a word of warning, I would discourage any mac users fro EVER trying to get their gear fixed at the Regent Street Apple Store. Turns out you have to make an appointment because they don't distinguish betwen "I need a new HD, please order one for me" and "I can't get into my email because I've forgotten my password".
Anyway, wen I return I shall hopefuly be returning with a review of the French/Romanian horror film Ils (Them) and my review of Stephen Baxter's Conqueror, the latter which I owe Strange Horizons but am oddly enjoying considering how much the first in the series got up my nose.
Also on the horizon are reviews of Stross' Missile Gap and Cormac McCarthy's The Road.
